Bay Area Remote Workers — and Their Employers — Could Face a Tax Mess

Since many Bay Area workers began working remotely in March 2020, many left San Francisco and the region to work out of state, with family or in places with more affordable accommodations. While the idea of working outside California may have seemed like a financially responsible move initially, many employees – and their employers – could face complex tax issues. 

BPM Managing Director John Hayashi, who leads the Firm’s State and Local Tax (SALT) practice, sat down with the San Francisco Business Times to talk about some of the issues that arise around remote work.  

“With the Covid-19 economy, state and local jurisdictions are going to be in more of a budget deficit than ever before, so everything is on the table,” he said.  

BPM HR and People Services Partner Jill Pappenheimer also mentioned the additional strains that come with managing a remote workforce.  

“Our clients are struggling with this issue of employees migrating to short- and long-term alternative locations and the impact on HR — payroll, benefits, workers comp, state registration and policy. It’s a pain point,” she said.
